PATRON SAINT: Saint Patrick is known as the patron saint of Ireland, immigrants and engineers. His feast day on March 17th is celebrated around the world.
LIFE OF SAINT PATRICK: Although Saint Patrick is most famous for being the well-loved Patron Saint of Ireland, his early life in the 5th century AD was challenging. He was in fact born in Roman Britain, where he was captured by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. He was set to work as a shepherd, protecting large herds of sheep, a lonely and hard life outdoors. He learned the Gaelic language of the Irish and relied on his Christian faith to give him hope of freedom.
In the long nights guarding his flock, Saint Patrick often turned to prayer. One evening, God appeared to him in a vision, telling Patrick to flee his life of servitude and escape to the coast. After a long and dangerous journey to the seaside, he found some sailors who thankfully agreed to take him back to his family.
Once home, Patrick again had a vision, where the Irish people implored him to come "walk among them" again. Despite all of the hardships he had gone through, he eagerly went back to his former place of captivity as a missionary, to bring the teachings of Christ to the Irish. Legend has it that he used the beloved three leaf shamrock to illustrate the Holy Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
